'California Gold and Confederate Rebels' Continues the American Civil War in the West Series at OldWestNewWest.Com

Cheyenne, WY (PRWEB) October 4, 2007 -- Angry Southern sympathizers demanding California secede, and rebels plotting to get San Francisco's gold are just part of the story of California and the Civil War in the October issue of OldWestNewWest.Com (www.oldwestnewwest.com) as the Internet eZine continues its look at how the war reached into the West.

"Northern California was a hotbed of Southern sympathizers who wanted not only to split California from the Union, but somehow stop the monthly gold shipments that were helping to pay for the North's war against the South," said Mike Harris, OldWestNewWest.Com editor.

"The only reason blood wasn't shed most likely is due to one man who refused to give thousands of Union Army guns and ammunition to Southern sympathizers," Harris continued. "That man was Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of Union forces, who later resigned his commission and became the number two general for the Confederate Army."

Although he was a Texan and a Southern sympathizer himself, Johnston felt honor bound to uphold his duty as a Union officer and protect federal arms and supplies. After resigning his commission, Johnston fled to Los Angeles and then crossed the Arizona desert with other sympathizers to join the South. Johnston later died at the Battle of Shiloh.

"It's amazing that one man's personal code of conduct, even though he was sympathetic with the South, prevented an open rebellion in San Francisco," Harris said. "It's only a small part of the story of California and the Civil War that we cover in this month's issue of OldWestNewWest.Com."
